Only 15 minutes from Lake Mary, you may reach the southern entry to this primeval ecosystem of blackwater streams and wetlands.
Katie’s Landing, near the midpoint of the Wekiva River, is my ideal starting spot. You’re about eight miles from the headspring and its connection with the St. Johns River. Kayaks and canoes can be launched here, and you can choose whether to paddle upstream or downstream.
Upstream, you’ll have to contend with a light current, but as consolation, the scenery is stunning. Downstream, the river tapers and currents help you drift along, making the voyage easier.
On your tour, you’ll undoubtedly encounter a magnificent array of birds, from sandhill cranes to eagles, as well as alligators, turtles, and fish.

There are many soaring pine trees here, and a nature trail leads you into the swampier parts along the lakefront. One lovely site is a footbridge that offers a clear view of the lake through the woods. It’s a unique area to be early in the day.
Liberty Park’s only active feature is a disc golf course designed in 2019 with 9 holes with DISCatcher Pro targets.

When it’s time to refuel, the Sky CafĂ© features an impressive selection of nutritious selections, as well as alcoholic beverages for parents.
